Medical Humanitarianism in Fragmented States: A Literature Review and Case Study of Humanitarian Medicine and Principles in Libya

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: For her capstone paper, Reem Ghanem explored how conflict and political fragmentation complicate medical humanitarianism across the world; providing specific focus on case studies in the Arab world, a region which has experienced conflict to an incredible extent in the 20th and 21st centuries. Ghanem centered on medical humanitarian intervention in the cases of Syria, Iraq, and Yemen to guide the ultimate exploration of medical humanitarianism in the ongoing Libyan conflict. Lastly, Ghanem argues that attention and urgency must be paid to understanding the humanitarian principles in the context of medical assistance in Libya. This is important in order to improve existing interventions and more broadly contribute to our understanding of how humanitarian actors can deliver effective medical interventions in fragmented settings while standing resolute in their commitments to the humanitarian principles.
