Spin Pumping in Calcium Iridate
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Since the invention of computers, processors have been getting exponentially smaller and faster, however we are quickly approaching the physical limits on classical computing hardware. In addition to physical size limits on devices like transistors, Joule heating, or the energy waste of a device, is becoming more and more of a problem. One promising solution to this problem is spintronic devices, or devices that manipulate electron spin to perform computations. An intermediary step in building a full spintronic device is developing an efficient way to convert spin current to charge current and vice versa. Previous work has shown that the strontium iridate/cobalt iron boride system is promising for this application, so in this work we investigate the magnetic properties of the calcium iridate/cobalt iron boride system. Over the course of the project, we have optimized the calcium iridate synthesis process, observed some interesting interface effects, and finally obtained an estimate for the spin diffusion length of the system that shows a spin diffusion length on the same scale as computational devices, which is a desirable quality for spintronic materials.
