Sustainable Polymer Composites: Advancing Green Infrastructure and Environmental Resilience
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The escalating environmental challenges posed by conventional construction materials have driven the exploration and development of sustainable polymer composites as eco-friendly alternatives for green infrastructure applications. This paper highlights advancements in bio-based, recycled, and biodegradable polymer composites, emphasizing their enhanced mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. Innovations such as natural fibre reinforcement, nanofillers, and hybrid systems, along with smart composites offering self-monitoring and repair capabilities, are reviewed for their potential in diverse applications, including construction, transportation, environmental remediation, and renewable energy. The incorporation of circular economy principles and the significant environmental and economic benefits, such as reduced carbon emissions, resource conservation, and cost savings, are discussed. While obstacles like cost competitiveness and material availability persist, this study underscores the transformative role of sustainable polymer composites in creating resilient, adaptable, and environmentally responsible infrastructure systems for a greener future.
