Grid Supporting Power Plants with 100% Energy from Wind and PV

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: At the current stage of the energy transition (2024) grid is the actual bottle neck for wider integration of renewable with exception of hydropower. PV and WIND are limited predictable with respect to timeframe and disposability of power. For smooth grid operation the grid requires predictable energy close the requirements of the connected consumer and able to be schedules by the grid operator at DSO and TSO level. Batteries enable delivery to grid closer to grid requirements. Using same grid connection and limiting the complete setup to maximal capacity of the connection point results in only 10-12% curtailment loss of the annual PV production without shifting the clipped energy by use of batteries. The paper shows the effect of multiple usage of the same grid connection as well as the behavior of overfilling the grid capacity significant and shifting the power by the use of batteries with charging power equal to the maximum grid dimension. The result shows that more than 50% of the whole year the grid can be supported with 70% of the nominal capacity. That allows the usage of such a setup for various business cases similar to river side hydro power or gas power plants.
