Abstract: Billfishes (Istiophoridae and Xiphiidae) form part of the marine fishery resource commercially \nexploited by some nations, notably Japan, from parts of the Indo-Pacific. Most of the \nfishery for billfishes from various parts of the Indian Ocean is carried out by the Japanese and \nCatch statistics published from Japan (Ann. 1959) indicate the occurrence of rich fishing grounds \nfor billfishes even within a few miles off the Indian coasts during certain seasons. However, \nlittle attention has been paid by Indian workers towards the study of the billfishes occurring in \nthe Indian seas, and as such hardly any data is available about their seasonal occurrence, species \ncomposition, method of capture etc., along our coast.
