Abstract: Summary. The article is devoted to the beaded cotillion – a popular component of Ukrainianfolk costumes of Eastern Galicia and Bukovyna in the first half of the 20th century. A significantportion of the compositional repertoire of this decoration consisted of national symbols that wereendorsed by the governments of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’sRepublic. Ukrainian society became more united around the concept of state independence as a resultof the widespread use of national symbols in folk art.The research’s primary sources consisted of visual and verbal information about the bead cotillioncollected during ethnographic expeditions while working in state museums, as well as received fromacademic colleagues and private collectors. The use of cotillions with tinctures (heraldic colors),heraldic figures, and coats of arms of the Ukrainian state was established. In particular, manycompositions contained a combination of elements of blue and yellow (gold) colors located next toeach other. The trident and the crowned lion leaning on a rock, key elements of the coats of armsof the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic, became favoritemotifs of Ukrainian cotillions.A significant place in the article is devoted to the analysis of the variability of compositionalsolutions of nationally labelled jewellery. The article’s analytical information and visuals cancontribute to the understanding and revival of cotillion as an outstanding ethno-artistic phenomenonof Ukrainians.Key words: Ukraine, folk art, bead cotillion, national symbols, coat of arms, flag.
