Role of Insulin-like Androgenic Gland in Macrobrachium rosenbergii
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Macrobrachium rosenbergii, also known as Giant Freshwater Prawn, is not only known for its size but also for its unique biological traits. One of the most interesting features of this species is the insulin-like androgenic gland (IAG), an organ crucial in determining the sex and growth of these prawns. Hormones, secreted by this gland, control sexual differentiation and reproductive development in male, making it vital to the life cycle of M. rosenbergii. Knowing how the IAG works will help prawn farmers to gain a better understanding of controlling sex ratios and improving growth rates in freshwater prawn farming. This paper provides a wide scope of knowledge on the inulin-like androgenic gland in Macrobrachium rosenbergii by reviewing its functions.
