Bauhaus Revisited: Uncovering its Enduring Influence and Potential for Sustainability
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The influence of Bauhaus on art, architecture, design, and communication in today's world is a subject of ongoing and crucial interest. The main question is: Can Bauhaus principles still be relevant today? Do they align with the ideals of democratization in the post-colonial context? Can Bauhaus principles be used to guide individuals and society towards sustainable development goals? These questions are essential due to the dynamic interplay between innovation and consumption in the globalized world and the interdependence between the Global North and South. The discussion encompasses Bauhaus's feasibility in the present day, its political implications, and its potential to adhere to ethical and aesthetic principles of social inclusion and integration, particularly in design and architectural practices aiming at sustainability and their impact on urban spaces and the environment. Additionally, the critique examines how digital spatial models are expanding urban spaces and how they can contribute to the creation and challenges of developing alternative forms of cohabitation in a time of coexistence among past, present, and future. This analysis includes an exploration of the power dynamics in colonial and decolonial contexts within the hybrid realities found in global cities in the context of digital technology, artificial intelligence, recycling, renewable energy, and new consumption habits.
