Impact of Burnout on the Adversity Response Level of Police Officers: a Proposed Intervention Measure

Type: article
Abstract: This study aimed to explore the impact of burnout levels on the Adversity Response Quotient (ARQ) of police officers in Bohol, with the objective of developing an effective intervention measure. The research examined the demographic profile of police officers, including factors such as age, gender, marital status, length of service, educational attainment, number of children, and dependents. Additionally, the study assessed the ARQ of the officers and analyzed their levels of burnout across three subscales: emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were male, aged 30 to 40, and married, with a service length of 6 to 15 years. Most officers were college graduates and had 1 to 3 children or dependents. The ARQ of police officers was found to be at an average level, indicating that they often felt in control and responsible for adverse situations, although these situations sometimes affected their lives. In terms of burnout, police officers experienced emotional exhaustion and depersonalization once a month or less, while feelings of personal accomplishment occurred once a week. The study found no significant relationship between the demographic profile and ARQ. However, the number of children was significantly correlated with burnout levels. Importantly, no significant correlation was found between the ARQ and burnout levels. Based on these conclusions, the study recommends that the Philippine National Police establish a platform for officers to report emotional or mental stress, along with organizing mental health seminars. It also suggests that police stations collaborate with mental health institutions to promote effective coping strategies and foster a supportive culture that addresses officers' mental well-being. Future research could further explore the role of social support in mitigating burnout and enhancing ARQ among police officers.
