Fish Hermaphroditism in Reef Fishes: A Review of Current Research
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Hermaphroditism, the presence of both male and female reproductive organs in a single individual, is a fascinating and complex reproductive strategy observed in various fish species, particularly in reef fishes. This review focuses on the prevalence, mechanisms, and ecological significance of hermaphroditism in reef fishes, with an emphasis on recent research findings. We explore the different forms of hermaphroditism, including simultaneous and sequential hermaphroditism, and discuss the ecological and evolutionary implications of this reproductive strategy. Understanding the dynamics of hermaphroditism in reef fishes is crucial for the conservation and management of coral reef ecosystems, which are under increasing pressure from anthropogenic stressors.
