An Analytical overview of the reasons for the increase of conflicts in Nigeria.

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Nigeria’s escalating conflicts, driven by a complex web of historical, socio-economic, political, and environmental factors, present significant challenges to the country’s stability and unity. Originating from colonial-era policies that exacerbated ethnic and regional tensions, these conflicts have been compounded by socio-economic disparities, ethno-religious divides, and competition for resources, creating deep-seated grievances across Nigerian society. This paper examines the primary drivers of conflict, including socio-economic inequalities, political and electoral dynamics, land and resource disputes, insurgency, and weaknesses within the governance and security sectors. Through a detailed analysis, it reveals how these factors interconnect and perpetuate cycles of violence, particularly in the Northeast and Middle Belt regions. The paper concludes that a comprehensive strategy focused on inclusive governance, equitable resource management, intergroup dialogue, and institutional reforms is essential for mitigating conflicts and building a peaceful, unified Nigeria.
