Abstract: The history of the country is the history of the kings who ruled the country and the life history of the citizens who lived in the country. A part of the life history of the Tamils who lived in the Sangam period is related to trade. In the Sangam period, people lived according to the place and circumstances where they lived. Trade relations were based on that. In ancient times, barter was practiced not only in Tamil Nadu but also in all countries of the world. Only expensive items were bought with money. Tamil literature shows that the ancient Tamils traded with many countries such as Sri Lanka, Chavakanad (East Indies), Malaya, Burma, Arab countries, Egypt, Rome, etc. The Tamil kings of the Sangam period encouraged traders in their countries and developed trade. They established port cities in their countries for the arrival and departure of merchant ships, export and import. As land and sea trade increased, agricultural development and industrial development increased, and product production increased. Due to the production of goods and trade, the country's economy grew, the country prospered, and the people lived in prosperity. The purpose of this article is to study the global trade, which was the fundamental reason for the prosperity and civilized life of the people of Tamil Nadu, through the Sangam literature.
