Optimizing Thyroid Function in Rheumatoid Arthritis: the Role of Investigation and Treatment
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: RA is a chronic autoimmune disease associated with systemic inflammation, and it carries a heightened risk of thyroid dysfunction, predominantly autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism. The bidirectional relationship between RA and thyroid disorders is driven by shared immunological pathways including the production of autoantibodies and inflammatory cytokine involvement. Some studies shown that thyroid dysfunction in RA patients can worsen symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, and metabolic disturbances that complicate the management of the disease. This review article updates the importance of investigation of thyroid function by thyroid function tests, autoimmune markers, and imaging studies in RA patients. The studies done by rheumatologist showed that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of thyroid disorders, such as levothyroxine therapy in hypothyroidism and antithyroid medications in hyperthyroidism, may lead positive effects such as improved energy levels and reduced fatigue, better joint and muscle function, reduced inflammation and disease burden, better cardiovascular health improvement in general health. Moreover, the Medically reviewed by Alyssa Walton, PharmD — Written by Kristeen Cherney shown that optimization of RA treatment with DMARDs and biologics may have a positive effect on thyroid function. Further research is needed to understand the effects of currently used treatments in RA on thyroid function and the potential benefits of targeted immunotherapies.
