Variable Speed of Light (VSL) in a Quantum Gravity Context Revisiting Classical Equations with Modern Observational Data

Abstract: : The speed of light (c) is a fundamental constant in Einstein’s relativity, governing spacetime structure and the laws of physics. However, theories of quantum gravity, extra-dimensional physics, and modified relativity frameworks suggest that the speed of light may not be truly invariant at all scales, particularly in the early universe or near extreme gravitational fields. The Variable Speed of Light (VSL) hypothesis challenges conventional physics by proposing that c evolves over time or in different energy regimes, offering alternative explanations for cosmic inflation, horizon problems, and gravitational singularities. This paper explores the VSL hypothesis within a quantum gravity framework, analyzing potential modifications to Einstein’s field equations, Maxwell’s electrodynamics, and cosmological expansion models. We examine whether loop quantum gravity (LQG), string theory, and holographic principles naturally allow for variations in c and assess the observational consequences for gravitational waves, cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, and high-energy cosmic rays. Key Highlights: Reviewing classical physics assumptions about the invariance of the speed of light. Theoretical motivations for a variable speed of light from quantum gravity and modified relativity models. Implications for early-universe cosmology, including solutions to the horizon and flatness problems. Observational constraints from gravitational waves, CMB anisotropies, and high-energy astrophysics. Experimental tests using next-generation cosmological and quantum optics experiments. By merging insights from quantum gravity, cosmology, and observational astrophysics, this work provides a modern reassessment of VSL theories, exploring their potential for reconciling fundamental physics with observational data. Keywords: Variable speed of light, quantum gravity, loop quantum gravity, modified relativity, string theory, cosmic inflation, horizon problem, gravitational waves, fundamental constants, observational cosmology.
