Deportation of the Peoples of the North Caucasus in the 1940s

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The deportation of the peoples of the North Caucasus to Kazakhstan during the 1940s stands as one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Soviet Union. Under Joseph Stalin's repressive policies, ethnic groups such as the Chechens, Ingush, Balkars, and Karachays were forcibly removed from their native Caucasian lands and resettled in remote regions of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. While the Soviet government officially justified these deportations by alleging collaboration with Nazi Germany, most scholars interpret them as a component of a broader strategy of ethnic cleansing and systemic repression within the USSR
