Archiving agricultural data to make it available for Generations – BonaRes Repository
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As more and larger amounts of research data are created in the agricultural domain, there is a growing need for its efficient management and publication and proper tools that support scientists in their daily work. One of the key challenges for data repositories is therefore professional data management that ensures the long-term findability, interpretability, and reusability of research data. This area of competence, known as "digital curation," also includes measures for digital long-term archiving. Long-term archiving is a proper strategy against data and information loss. The Open Archival Information System (OAIS) (ISO 14721) introduces some of these measures and serves as a reference model for a digital archive with defined responsibilities, processes and functional entities. We have developed workflows in which research data that has been published in the BonaRes Repository and can be referenced with a DOI is automatically transferred to the external archive infrastructure of ZB MED based on Rosetta (ExLibris). Metadata is mapped from the BonaRes metadata schema (incl. DataCite and INSPIRE) to the requested archival metadata standard (Dublin Core for descriptive metadata). Rosetta furthermore generates and stores preservation metadata using the PREMIS standard and structures metadata types according to the METS-standard. Successful OAIS-compliant digital long-term archiving of agricultural research data will be recorded in our internal ticket system. If required, data, metadata and supplementary material can be retransferred from the archive to the repository. With our poster contribution, we introduce our established workflow - from the repository to the archive and back again.
