Allelopathy: Mechanisms and Applications in Agriculture

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Allelopathy, the study of chemical interactions between plants and microorganisms affecting the growth and distribution of other species, has gained significant attention in agriculture and ecology. This review explores allelopathy's role in enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. Allelochemicals, secondary metabolites produced by plants and microbes, can either stimulate or inhibit growth, offering natural alternatives to synthetic agrochemicals. Key applications include crop rotations, intercropping, and straw mulching, which utilize allelopathic effects to control weeds, pests, and improve soil health. Additionally, allelochemicals aid in nitrogen management, reducing leaching and environmental pollution. The mechanisms underlying allelopathy involve changes in plant cell structures, antioxidant systems, and nutrient uptake, along with effects on soil microorganisms and ecological interactions. Despite its potential, the full use of allelopathy in sustainable agriculture remains underexplored, and further research is needed to develop commercially viable applications.
