Mapping Human Perceptions of Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: : Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change is a key concept in environmental studies, reflecting the dynamic interaction between human activities and natural processes. This theoretical study analyses LULC changes over a 30-year period (1989–2019) to understand patterns of landscape transformation. Using spatial tools such as change detection matrices and comparative mapping, the study reveals an increase in agricultural/horticultural land (5.16%), barren land (1.42%), and built-up areas (5.31%), indicating urban expansion and intensified land use. Simultaneously, forest cover declined by 5.31% and pasture/open land by 8.03%, raising concerns about ecological degradation. The slight increase in river/stream channels (1.28%) and sandy areas (0.08%) may reflect environmental responses to land use pressures. These trends align with theoretical models of environmental change, emphasizing the need for sustainable land management. The study underlines the role of geospatial analysis in understanding LULC transitions and guiding policies for balanced development and environmental conservation.
