The Aesthetic Phenomenon of Opera and the Stage Director's Approach to Interpretation
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Opera in the late 20th and early 21st centuries has evolved under the influence of contemporary mass culture, particularly in directorial interpretation. This study examines the shift from traditional operatic canons toward a dramaturgical approach shaped by dramatic theater, often prioritizing theatrical realism over musical expression. The transition of directors from theater to opera has led to reinterpretations that sometimes distort the composer’s artistic vision and diminish the role of vocal artistry. Postmodernist aesthetics have further reshaped opera, introducing eclecticism and deconstruction that challenge its structured musical-dramatic unity. This study underscores the importance of preserving opera’s balance between music and drama, emphasizing that a deep understanding of its artistic principles is crucial for practical directorial work.
