Mirror Stage on Repeat: Codependency, Digital Trolling, and the Eternal Return of the Anime-Bonded Pair. Part II of "A Boy in Tights Is Not a Transsexual"

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: The Couple That Trolls Together, Stays Together In the endless scroll of VK chats and Instagram stories, one encounters an archetype so enduring, so grotesquely invincible, that it survives psychoanalysis, heartbreak, even deletion: the anime couple. These digital unions, formed through reciprocal trolling, shared aesthetic trauma, and mutual infantilization, are not mere pathological dyads. They are cultural artifacts of a society post-everything — post-father, post-intimacy, post-future. As Lacan once posited, the mirror stage is where the subject recognizes itself as an image — a fiction that grants unity but masks fragmentation (Lacan, 1949/2006). For these couples, the mirror stage never ends. They are forever stuck in reflection, glued to the screen and to each other, rerunning scripts of love, humiliation, and compulsive reenactment.
