Solastalgic Aesthetics: Transformed Landscapes in Tashan Mehta's "Leaf Whispers, Ocean Song"

Type: article
Abstract: The escalating environmental crisis has not only disrupted ecosystems but also reshaped human consciousness, leading to profound emotional responses such as solastalgia- a term coined by Glenn Albrecht to describe the distress caused by the loss of familiar environments. Tashan Mehta’s “Leaf Whispers, Ocean Song” epitomizes this emotional and ecological upheaval, portraying a world where landscapes shift unpredictably, leaving individuals in a state of existential disorientation. This paper explores how Mehta’s short story engages with solastalgic aesthetics, using poetic prose, immersive world-building, and posthumanist perspectives to depict the dynamic entanglement between human and nonhuman entities. By analysing key passages and contextualizing them within ecocriticism and posthumanist theory, this study demonstrates how “Leaf Whispers Ocean Song” challenges anthropocentric notions of place and belonging. The short story, in its evocative lamentation of changing landscapes, transforms solastalgia from mere nostalgia into a radical reimagining of ecological kinship and survival in a world of flux.
