Cultivating Gender Equality in a Research Environment that Supports Increased Creativity and Innovation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This presentation was delivered as part of the workshop "Gender dimension in research and innovation" (2nd Edition) organized by Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv on April 28–29, 2025. The presentation addresses the hidden dynamics of gender stereotypes and their impact on teamwork, creativity, and innovation in research environments. It draws on psychological theories, sociological observations, and practical experience to explore how unconscious biases, emotional tensions, and competition based on gendered expectations can hinder team performance. Key topics include: Common gender stereotypes in Ukrainian society and how they affect perceptions of leadership, communication, and collaboration. Different patterns of competition and communication between male and female groups, and the risks they pose for research productivity. How psychoanalytic theories (such as the Oedipal conflict) can explain shifts in team dynamics when gendered attraction or rivalry is present. The importance of emotional intelligence, setting clear boundaries, and openly discussing uncomfortable issues such as attraction or tension within teams. Practical strategies to shift focus from gender to team psychology, emphasizing personal traits, communication styles, and individual maturity rather than gender-based assumptions. The presentation emphasizes that gender equality does not mean erasing differences, but rather creating a research environment where differences are acknowledged, respected, and used as a source of strength for innovation and collaboration.
