Wireless Power Transfer for EV Charging Using Resonant Inductive Coupling
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This research paper explores a novel approach to electric vehicle (EV) charging using Wireless PowerTransfer (WPT) based on Resonant Inductive Coupling (RIC). Traditional EV charging systemsrequire physical connectors, which can be inconvenient, prone to mechanical wear, and unsuitable forautomated or weather-exposed environments. In contrast, RIC enables efficient, contactless energytransfer between a transmitter coil embedded in the charging station and a receiver coil within the EV,using magnetic resonance at a common frequency. The study delves into the theoretical principles of RIC, outlines the complete system architecture, anddiscusses key hardware components such as inverters, resonant coils, ferrite plates, and control circuitry.A prototype design was simulated using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrating high power transferefficiency (up to ~89%) at a distance of 10 cm, making it suitable for Level 2 urban chargingapplications. In addition to simulation, a case study of an urban parking lot deployment illustrates practicalconsiderations such as alignment, safety shielding, and user interaction. The results suggest that withproper tuning and design optimization, RIC-based WPT systems can serve as a scalable and user-friendlyalternative to plug-in charging. The paper concludes by highlighting the future scope of dynamiccharging, integration with smart infrastructure, and standardization efforts.
