The Grammar Trap: Does Mastery of English Rules Hinder Filipino Students' Reading Comprehension?
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: English is one of the official languages of the Philippines and serves as the primary medium of instruction in many schools. Despite this, Filipino students have consistently performed poorly in reading comprehension assessments. The 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results revealed that the Philippines ranked the lowest in reading comprehension among 79 participating countries. Given that grammar mastery is a significant part of English instruction, it raises the question: does an excessive focus on grammar hinder students’ ability to understand texts effectively?
