The Role of Phonetic Software in language learning
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: . This article reviews recent developments in the integration of computer technologies into pronunciation instruction within second language learning. It highlights the challenges of acquiring accurate pronunciation and explores how phonetic software—particularly Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) systems—addresses these difficulties. Key technological tools discussed include Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), acoustic visualization programs like Praat, mobile applications such as ELSA Speak, and gamified learning platforms. The review presents empirical findings supporting the effectiveness of these tools in enhancing both segmental and suprasegmental pronunciation features. Additionally, the article outlines existing limitations, including issues of accessibility, accent recognition, and hardware requirements. It emphasizes the importance of pedagogical integration and teacher training for successful implementation. Future directions such as deep learning, augmented reality, and multimodal feedback are discussed as promising innovations. The study concludes that phonetic software, when applied appropriately, can significantly enhance pronunciation instruction and learner confidence, transforming pronunciation from a peripheral aspect into a core component of language education.
