Global Burden of AIDS

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 highlights the significant global impact of HIV/AIDS, detailing trends from 1990 to 2021 and projecting future patterns up to 2050. New HIV infections decreased by 21.9%, from 2.11 million in 2010 to 1.65 million in 2021, and HIV-related deaths fell by 39.7%, from 1.19 million to 718,000 in the same period. The global number of people living with HIV increased from 29.5 million in 2010 to 40 million in 2021. Sub-Saharan Africa saw the most substantial improvements in reducing both HIV incidence and mortality. However, regions like Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia experienced rising HIV rates. Looking ahead, the global trend is expected to continue with declines in HIV incidence and mortality, though the number of people living with HIV will peak at around 44.4 million by 2039 before gradually decreasing. Despite these advances, the study underscores the need for sustained efforts, especially in regions where the epidemic persists, to meet the ambitious 2030 global targets for HIV prevention and treatment.
