Capture the Flag and Cybersecurity Employability - The role of CTFs as a tool for skill development and increased employability for junior candidates in cybersecurity
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the role of Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions in developing technical skills and enhancing employability for students and junior candidates in cybersecurity. Using qualitative surveys with both CTF-participating students and cybersecurity employers, it examines how CTFs are perceived as learning tools and as signals of motivation, problem-solving ability, and passion during recruitment. Grounded in signaling theory, employability theory, and constructivist learning theory, the findings show that while CTFs are generally not a substitute for formal education, they are seen as a valuable complement – especially for candidates lacking work experience. The study highlights CTFs as an accessible and practical way to bridge the gap between education and employment in the cybersecurity industry.
