Report on the results of the media analysis
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This report compiles the main results of the analysis of narratives in regional news media in four European border regions: the Danish-Swedish, Franco-German, Polish-German-Czech, and Slovak-Hungarian border regions. Utilising a narrative analytical framework, the case studies explore how media narratives shape perceptions of borders, European integration, and cross-border cooperation within the context of significant events like the Covid-19 pandemic or the migration crisis. The research defines narratives as structured stories encompassing temporal sequences, dramatic elements and symbols, aiming to convey plausible interpretations of events. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative analysis, combining bottom-up text analysis with top-down comparative enquiry across selected regional newspapers. The analysis covers the time period between the 2019 and 2024 European elections, a turbulent time in European integration that saw the Covid-19 pandemic, concerns over immigrants from outside the EU, as well as a number of local controversies.
