Exploring Spirituality in Modern English Literature
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper explores the intricate theme of spirituality in modern literature, emphasizing its universaland transformative essence beyond religious confines. Spirituality, depicted as a journey of selfdiscovery, connection, and transcendence, emerges as a response to existential dilemmas and culturalfragmentation. Drawing insights from Indian and Western literary traditions, the paper examines howpoets and authors use nature, inner consciousness, and metaphysical inquiry to express spiritualdimensions. Writers such as Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, T.S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, andRainer Maria Rilke present spirituality as a deeply personal and reflective pursuit. Tagore’s lyricalmysticism, Eliot’s modernist spiritual remedy, and Mahapatra’s rooted metaphysical vision arejuxtaposed with Rilke’s abstract universality and Emerson’s transcendental introspection. Comparativeanalyses reveal shared motifs of unity, peace, and divine longing, illustrating that spirituality inliterature transcends geography and doctrine. Nature, silence, memory, and suffering becomemediums for divine insight, enabling literature to serve as a sanctuary of introspection in an alienatedworld. Ultimately, this study affirms that spirituality in poetry and prose offers not just aestheticexperience but also a timeless path to healing, harmony, and holistic understanding of the humancondition.
