The Reception of Blessings According to Vinaya Principles

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the practice of “giving and receiving blessings” in Buddhism, interpreted through the framework of the Vinaya and the lived practices of the Buddharaksa Moral Community. Although the term “blessing” does not explicitly appear in the Tipiṭaka, phrases of anumodana and auspicious verses such as “Āyu, Vaṇṇo, Sukhaṃ, Balaṃ” have long been upheld as expressions of compassion and benevolence by the Saṅgha. As blessings are considered a form of Dhamma exposition, they must adhere to the Vinaya, particularly the rule that prohibits a monk from delivering teachings while standing to seated laypersons an act that would otherwise incur an offense. This study proposes appropriate guidelines for community practice, including standing respectfully when receiving blessings, avoiding excessively low seating and limiting prolonged kneeling. Ultimately, receiving blessings is not merely a ritual act but an embodied reception of the Dhamma, harmonizing respect between monks and laity and preserving the spirit of the Vinaya.
