Eco-Technological Intervention for Medicinal Plant Conservation in Tribal Regions Nandurbar from Maharashtra
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The traditional medicinal knowledge of indigenous communities in the Nandurbar region of Maharashtra represents a rich cultural and botanical heritage. However, this valuable repository is increasingly threatened by habitat loss, overexploitation, and lack of conservation strategies. In response to these challenges, this project aims to establish a shade-net nursery dedicated to the conservation, propagation, and awareness of ethnomedicinal plants native to the region. The initiative seeks to create a controlled environment that supports the sustainable growth of region-specific medicinal plant species, many of which are integral to tribal health practices and local biodiversity. By integrating shade-net technology, the nursery will maintain optimal conditions for plant growth while protecting sensitive species from climatic stress. The project also emphasizes documentation, educational outreach, and community participation, encouraging the revival and preservation of indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) related to plant-based healing. This conservation model serves both ecological and educational purposes—acting as a living repository of traditional medicine, a training ground for students and local healers, and a step toward sustainable resource management. It highlights the potential of low-cost green technologies and community engagement in conserving biodiversity and safeguarding traditional wisdom for future generations..
