Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The evolution of India’s education and business systems has been deeply interconnected, forming adynamic knowledge-economy link that has shaped the country’s prosperity over centuries. This paperexplores the historical trajectory of India’s knowledge-driven economy, beginning with thefoundational role of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) in skill development, trade, and technologicaladvancements. Ancient institutions such as Takshashila and Nalanda served as centers ofmultidisciplinary learning, fostering innovations in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, andmetallurgy—fields that significantly contributed to business growth and trade expansion. India’s earlybusiness models, driven by trade guilds (Shrenis), robust financial systems, and maritime commerce, thrived on a strong educational foundation that continuously nurtured economic progress. The studyalso examines disruptions caused by colonial interventions, which dismantled indigenous educationand economic frameworks, leading to a knowledge-economy imbalance. Post-independence reforms, including the establishment of premier institutions such as IITs and IIMs, have contributed torebuilding this link, fostering India’s rise as a global hub for technology, entrepreneurship, and aknowledge-based economy. The paper further analyzes the positive cycle wherein education drivesknowledge and skill development, which in turn fuels business growth, leading to economic prosperityand further strengthening education systems. Drawing insights from history, the study highlightscontemporary challenges and proposes strategies for leveraging India’s knowledge heritage to enhancemodern economic policies and sustainable growth.
