Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study explored the experiences of Home Economics teachers in senior high schools in Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal Division, as they navigated the resurgence of Home Economics in fostering 21st-century life skills. Specifically, it aimed to examine their lived experiences in teaching practical competencies, the strategies they employed to address instructional challenges, and the educational insights that emerged from their efforts. Using a phenomenological approach, the research utilized in-depth interviews with 6 participants and focus group discussions with 4 participants to gain a deeper understanding of the participants' realities. Thematic analysis revealed several key findings. In terms of their teaching experiences, Home Economics teachers expressed a renewed sense of purpose in equipping learners with essential life skills such as cooking, budgeting, and home management. However, they faced significant limitations, including inadequate instructional materials, lack of specialized facilities, and minimal institutional support. Despite these constraints, they reported success in building student engagement by connecting lessons to real-life applications, thereby enhancing relevance and interest. To overcome these challenges, teachers demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness and creativity. They repurposed available materials, sought donations, and fostered collaboration with parents, local businesses, and community stakeholders. Professional growth was also a coping mechanism, with teachers pursuing continuous training and adopting innovative strategies to enhance instruction. From an educational perspective, three critical insights emerged: the vital role of Home Economics in holistic student development, the importance of resourcefulness and adaptability in teaching, and the need for system-wide support to sustain the subject’s relevance.
