Victory Coins of Constantine I (AD 324–325 - Late Victory Type)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the characteristics and symbolic meanings of the late Victory coinage of Emperor Constantine I (AD 324–325), issued after his triumph over Emperor Licinius and in celebration of his Vicennalia (20th anniversary of reign). Distinguished by the depiction of a single standing Victory holding a shield inscribed VOT / XX or a wreath, alongside the emperor’s portrait wearing a rosette-diadem, the coins represent the consolidation of imperial authority and the stability of a reunified empire. Drawing upon the Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) corpus, field specimen analysis and scholarly sources, this study highlights the role of these coins as instruments of political messaging and public celebration in the closing years of Constantine’s reign.
