Cognitive Analysis of Gender Category in the German Language
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The German language presents a grammatical gender system with three categories: masculine, feminine, and neuter. This study explores how native speakers cognitively process these gender distinctions and how gender assignment influences linguistic comprehension and categorization. Through psycholinguistic experiments and corpus analysis, the study reveals systematic patterns in gender attribution and conceptual associations, suggesting that grammatical gender shapes thought and perception in measurable ways. Grammatical gender is a central feature of the German language, with all nouns classified as masculine, feminine, or neuter. While these gender assignments are largely syntactic, they can also influence how speakers cognitively process and conceptually organize linguistic information. This study explores the cognitive implications of grammatical gender in German, focusing on how native speakers perceive, categorize, and mentally represent gendered nouns.
