Tracing the Disability, Gender, and Tradition Conundrum

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The intersection of disability with feminism and tradition presents challenges and opportunities for advancing social justice. The role of feminist theories has been instrumental in widening the scope of philosophical inquiry to incorporate/embrace a much wider range of experiential knowledge, including those of women with disabilities. The paper shows how traditional norms and practices bearing upon disabled individuals, particularly women, create complex layers of marginalization. Through a genealogical intervention; and exploring the possibility to reinterpret and reinvent traditions, the paper aims to examine and transform gendered, ableist, and traditional norms; while advocating for a more inclusive understanding of identity and the gendered nature of disability.
