Inherited Weakness: Community Lessons and the Hidden Genetics Behind Local Cases Mistaken for Polio

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines recurring patterns of muscle weakness observed in rural families, often collectively referred to by local communities as “Polio.” Field observations reveal that many of these cases are more likely linked to inherited neuromuscular disorders such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), which can closely mimic polio symptoms. In rural settings, the absence of genetic testing has contributed to misdiagnosis and cultural interpretations as “Fate” or “Family Curse.” The author highlights the community’s tacit knowledge in recognizing generational weakness but notes the lack of structured medical validation. The paper proposes a framework for “Family Mapping” to document high-risk lineages, combined with collaborations with medical genetics institutions and the moral-spiritual support of local Buddhist communities. This approach aims to transform silence and stigma into a community-based database, fostering inclusive care and dignity for affected individuals while strengthening long-term public health resilience.
