From Life-Giver to Climate Threat: Understanding Carbon's Dual Role Through Footprint Analysis

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The importance of carbon as an essential element of life is demarcated. It serves as a double role in confirming life in solid forms while providing global warming in gaseous forms, like as carbon dioxide (CO2) when fossil fuels are burned. Carbon footprint is described as the estimation of release of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion. It is distinguished into primary (direct emissions) and secondary (indirect emissions) impacts. Numerous techniques are employed to estimate footprints of carbon, following standards like ISO 14067 and ISO 14064. The deliberation focuses on the carbon footprint connected with renewable energy sources, particularly biofuels, and industries like food and cement that contribute remarkably to greenhouse gas emissions. Particularly, the food industry’s emissions are exceptional, as it contributes a significant percentage of the global GHG emissions in Europe. Similarly, the cement industry constitutes over 5% of overall emissions. In assessing carbon footprints, different types of scope such as scope emissions give structured evaluation categorized for direct and indirect emission. Many international enterprises have appeared to reduce emissions and fight against climate change, including regulatory frameworks and treaties like the Paris Agreement. These attempts enhance the significance of improved efficiency, sustainable practices, and global cooperation in reducing carbon footprints and managing climate change challenges.
