The Network of Falsehoods: Sissela Bok on Lies and Trust

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Imagine living in a world where no one tells the truth. Each lie, whether a so-called “white lie” or a bold political deception, adds to a tangled web of falsehoods that becomes ever harder to sustain. This was the warning of philosopher Sissela Bok in her classic work Lying: Moral Choice in Private and Public Life. Bok argued that honesty is the “social glue” of trust, and that every time someone lies, they chip away at the foundations of that trust. In today’s media-saturated world, with viral rumors and political spin, Bok’s insight is more urgent than ever: a single lie may seem small, but it forces its teller (and listeners) into a network of falsehoods that is difficult to maintain. This article unpacks Bok’s key ideas about lying and explore how research in media, psychology, and sociology confirms her intuition. It looks at how lies spread and erode trust in relationships, journalism, and politics – and why cultivating truth-telling matters for healthy communication and society.
