Volume Seven: Kentucky: An Archaic Echo of Con Tacchi?
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: : Language often conceals more than it reveals, especially when phonetics, regionalisms, and cultural history intersect. In the case of The Simpsons' assertion that "Kentucky" means "whore" in Italian, what appears on the surface to be a comedic oversimplification hides a deeper, linguistically rich past. While "puttana" is the modern and recognized Italian word for "whore," archaic Tuscan slang offers a forgotten thread of language evolution where the term tacchi (heels) was linked to prostitution. This study proposes that the Simpsons joke about "Kentucky" may not be as erroneous as initially dismissed by “trivia experts”—when viewed through the lens of forgotten regional dialects and linguistic history.
