Impact of anthropogenic activities on channel deformations of mountain rivers: Case study of the Turyanchay River, Azerbaijan
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: \nRiver channel deformation is a phenomenon forming with the impact of water flow and riverbed processes through the transportation and deposition of sediments, which leads to erosion, and seasonal, multi-year, and historical changes in river channels. As a result of the interaction of the river flow and riverbed, the channel has formed its shape over the decades. This natural process could be disturbed by the impact of anthropogenic activities. The main purpose of this article is to study the channel deformations that occurred solely due to anthropogenic interference. The Turyanchay River, like most mountain rivers in Azerbaijan, has experienced significant changes in its depositional environment due to anthropogenic disturbances and climatic influences in recent decades. This study takes a close look at the case of the Turyanchay River. It utilises satellite images and remote sensing data, along with in situ data collected through field trips to the research area. These collected and analysed datasets determined all types of impacts that led to riverbed deformation. It showcases how the impacts of anthropogenic activities can contribute to riverbed deformation, altering the natural morphology and dynamics of river systems.\n
