Research progress in zirconia toughened alumina ceramics
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties compared to single-phase Al2O3 and ZrO2 ceramics, demonstrating broader application prospects in high-end industrial fields such as electronics, biomedicine, and semiconductors. This paper reviews the toughening mechanism of ZTA ceramics and summarizes recent research progress, both domestic and international, on three aspects: powder preparation, sintering methods, and the introduction of the third phase. It focuses on analyzing the role of third-phase incorporation in ZTA ceramics through the use of various sintering techniques and processing methods. Finally, it points out that the nano-structuring of powders, fine control of advanced sintering techniques, and exploration of the microstructure through third-phase modulation are key directions for future research.
