Laurence Whistler, The Dream of the Rood, and the Alfred Jewel

Abstract: An image of the Alfred Jewel serves as the central point of an engraved glass visualisation by Laurence Whistler of the poem The Dream of the Rood, a commemorative window produced for St Nicholas’s Church, Moreton, Dorset, in 1975. Building on my previous work on the Dream of the Rood window, this essay analyses Whistler’s use of the oval shape of the Alfred Jewel and the inscription on its frame to explore connections between his glass visualisation and the original poem. It considers the possible influences on Whistler of contemporary interpretations of the figure depicted on the Jewel, and shows how Whistler has exploited the technique of optical illusion to convey different perspectives on the poem and its meanings. The essay argues that the Alfred Jewel is not only physically the central point of the Dream of the Rood window, but also the key to its personal and spiritual meanings for Whistler.
