Abstract: In Japan, Covid-19 infection spread after February 2020, and a state of emergency was declared for the whole country in April. As a result, measures restricting family visits were implemented in group homes where elderly and/ or disabled people reside. In May 2023, the status of Covid-19 in the Infectious Diseases Act was relaxed. Therefore, this study investigates how restrictions on visits and interactions with family members were implemented in group homes where elderly people with dementia reside, and how they subsequently recovered. In this study, interviews were conducted with three staff members of three group homes where older people with dementia live. The survey included three questions: 1) How restrictions on visits with family members were implemented in the group homes; 2) What method were taken to maintain interaction with family members, 3) How do you have plans to restore visits and interaction with family members after the position under the Infection Act has been relaxed? The findings were following. All residencies sent lots of photos of residents and increased the number of phone calls they made. In addition, one facility used a larger room to ventilate and conducted shorter visits. In two other facilities, online visits were conducted using tablet terminals or smartphone screens to resume visits and interaction.
