Ælfgifu of Northampton, The Shadow Queen. Girl power in 11th century Northern Europe.

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This Ælfgifu of Northampton (c. 990 – 1040), consort of Cnut the Great and mother of King Harold I (nicknamed "Harefoot"), represents one of the most politically significant yet understudied women of eleventh-century Northern Europe. Operating within the complex dynastic politics of England, Denmark, and Norway, Ælfgifu navigated a path from noble exile to regent of Norway and kingmaker in England. This paper argues that Ælfgifu was not merely a repudiated royal wife in Cnut's reign, but a strategic political actor whose agency shaped the succession crises of the North Sea Empire. Her career illuminates the contested nature of female authority, the flexibility of marital customs, and the propaganda wars inherent in medieval dynastic struggles.
