The Role of Teachers in Student Mental Health: Contributing Factors to Suicidal Ideation
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Student suicide remains a significant public health crisis, influenced by a complex interplay of factors including mental health disorders, academic pressure, bullying, and familial issues. However, the role of educators in either mitigating or exacerbating these risks is frequently overlooked. This paper critically examines how teaching styles, disciplinary methods, and classroom environments impact student mental health, potentially contributing to suicidal ideation. It explores the effects of punitive teaching, emotional neglect, excessive academic pressure, and systemic school issues. Additionally, the paper presents evidence-based solutions, such as enhanced teacher training, school-based mental health initiatives, and systemic policy reforms, aimed at fostering a more supportive educational environment. Addressing these concerns is imperative to reducing student suicide rates and promoting long-term psychological resilience.
