Warnsignal Klima: Entwicklung der Starkniederschläge
Year: 2024
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Climate warning signal: development of heavy precipitation: Basic physical principles suggest that ongoing climate change is having an impact on the frequency and characteristics of heavy precipitation. The IPCC‘s latest assessment report concludes that the frequency and intensity have probably increased worldwide for most land regions with good observation coverage. For Germany, station measurement series and, since 2001, area-wide radar observations are available for evaluation. Analyses of this data indicate a trend towards an increase, although in the case of the station data this is currently not statistically significant for many stations and in the case of the radar data only for the short period of time that does not allow a clear attribution to climate change. New analyses of the first convection-permitting climate simulations for southern Germany also indicate that more frequent or more intense heavy precipitation can be expected in the climate of the future.
