Abstract: Since its foundation, Mount Athos has enjoyed privileges of self-governance and autonomy, under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the nominal sovereignty of successive ruling states. Following the retreat of the Ottoman Empire (1912–1913), the international status of Mount Athos was formally addressed by the Balkan states and the Great Powers, who explicitly recognized its independent, neutral, and autonomous character. The Athonite monks firmly rejected proposals for internationalization, instead advocating integration into the Greek state, on the condition that the ancient monastic polity and traditions be preserved intact. The Hellenic Republic formally acknowledged this status through its Constitution and the Charter of Mount Athos of 1926. Concurrently, a comprehensive corpus of critical texts, memoranda, resolutions, and statements issued by the Athonite authorities was published, documenting their unwavering efforts to safeguard the spiritual identity and administrative sovereignty of the monastic polity.
