Module Parameters Extraction for Assessing Photovoltaic Energy Yield: A Comparative Approach

Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Parameter extraction techniques play a crucial role in accurately modelling the performance of Photovoltaic (PV) modules. Extracting the modelling parameters from measurements is critical for ensuring accurate performance predictions and energy yield estimates. Various modelling approaches are available, each providing different methods for parameter extraction. The aim of this paper is to identify suitable combinations of models and extraction methods for system performance modelling. Data for modules is taken from measurements according to the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) energy rating series (IEC61853), specifically the irradiancetemperature matrices. A variety of extraction methods for different modelling approaches including the one diode model, Lambert function are employed and the accuracy of these approaches is determined by re-calculating the energy matrices and evaluating statistical parameters for agreement quality. The impact of the different combinations of modelling and extraction approaches within IEC61853 framework is demonstrated by the variation in modelling results using the standardized environmental datasets from IEC61853-4. The aim is not to determine a ‘best’ modelling approach, but to quantify the differences that can be expected due to different approaches, enabling an estimation of uncertainties and discussion discussion of which model is sufficient for various applications.
