Integrating the Montessori Method in Secondary School Education: Assessing Strengths and Challenges of Student-focused Learning

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study explores the application of the Montessori method in secondary school education, focusing on its potential to foster student autonomy, critical thinking, and collaboration in a traditionally teacher-centered environment. Despite its roots in early childhood education, there is growing interest in adapting Montessori principles for older students, as these methods encourage self-directed learning and hands-on experiences. The study examines the strengths and challenges of integrating Montessori practices into secondary education, aiming to assess their impact on student engagement, motivation, academic performance, and personal development. Data were collected via a questionnaire distributed to 25 participants, including students and English language teachers, to gather both quantitative and qualitative insights. Results indicated that while the Montessori approach is seen as effective in enhancing collaboration and student engagement, challenges related to curriculum constraints and varying student preferences for structure were also identified. The findings suggest that Montessori methods can complement traditional education in secondary schools, offering a more personalized and student-centered learning experience. However, successful integration requires balancing the flexibility of Montessori principles with the need for structured learning environments that cater to diverse student needs. This study provides insights into the potential and challenges of applying the Montessori method in secondary education and highlights the need for further research into its adaptation for different educational contexts.
